A portrayal of life in small town Wisconsin circa 1918 instills an appreciation for our ancestors with their challenges and our privileges.

Who or what will come by train? “Old roots for a new place.” Nan begins life in the small fictitious town of Falls Lake, Wisconsin. Transplanting her roots is a challenging task. Timothy and Nan Braun take up married life and children. Unanticipated constraints and expectations must be faced. Circumstances bring a former rival into contact and later an unusual request that intertwines and binds their roots together. As the events unfold, Nan recognizes how good and gracious God’s will is and how deeply the Root that matters is planted.

Their children reminisce at the time when Timothy is awaiting his summons to be with the Lord. From this perspective the narrative delves further into the Braun children’s growing years, the deep relationship between the sisters, and Elizabeth’s evolving emotions about who or what came by train. How blessed are those who die in the Lord.

“The characters in Deborah Ude's books are so well presented that they become as familiar as family. While the author's books cover several generations, with differing backgrounds for individuals, her vivid descriptions easily draw the reader into each scene and story line as a participant—not as a bystander. A constant throughout her books is the God-given faith which moves her characters through times of sadness as well as times of joy with the assurance that the Lord does all things well. A welcome change from today’s popular literature.” --Anne Koch

About

Deborah K. Ude

Deborah Ude wrote poetry and short stories throughout high school and college. The Lord used her creative talents in teaching and raising nine children with her husband, Professor John Ude. When the last of the children entered the final stages of leaving home, Deborah realized time was available to develop her writing skills. Writing, visits from nine children and grandchildren, campus activities, and occasional substitute teaching adequately filled the empty nest. The lack of novels based on her German Lutheran heritage suggested a niche that she could attempt to fill.

Deborah went to be with Jesus June 29, 2017.
